Overview

Polyvine Wood Oil is a UV-resistant oil, based on renewables and suitable for both interior and exterior use. It gives a silky sheen and beautifully accentuates the natural grain of the wood without the addition of solvents. The oil penetrates deeply to waterproof, protect and preserve the wood. You can apply it to both softwoods and hardwood timbers.

Compared with other wood oils, Polyvine Wood Oil has an ultra-low VOC content; less than 7g/l VOC, as opposed to the EU, accepted standard of 400g/l VOC.

This is a very versatile oil ideal for furniture, tables, doors, worktops, summer houses, fencing, cladding, sheds, pergolas, flooring, and staircases.

Preparation

New timber should be clean, oil free and completely dry. Remove all old coatings to bare wood. If the timber is not pressure treated apply an appropriate wood preservative.

  • If the timber has been previously coated, sand back to bare wood to remove any old coatings. A wood stripper may be used for this.
  • Lightly sand to provide a key and remove any resulting dust. Wipe the surface down with a lint free cloth dampened with methylated spirit.
  • Remove mould or algae with a fungicidal wash.
  • Fill gaps with a suitable wood filler. If the surface has not been pressure treated, apply a suitable wood preserver.

Application

Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin

  • Apply to a test area before you start. Do not apply when rain is likely. Timbers such as teak, which contain high natural oils, may inhibit drying and cause impaired adhesion.
  • If you're treating a wood with high natural oils, wipe the surface with methylated spirit to assist penetration of the oil.
  • Application rollers, sponges and pads or clothes soaked in Polyvine Wood Oil may spontaneously combust if left. Dispose of after soaking in water.
  • If dry sanding, wear a suitable face mask.
  • Do not apply in temperatures below 5 degrees celsius.
  • Apply a thin even coat of Polyvine Wood Oil with a brush or clean, , going in the direction of the grain. Work the oil into the grain of the wood ensuring that the timber is completely saturated. Allow a minimum of 12 hours to dry, then apply a second coat. Allow 12 hours for the second coat to dry.
  • Clean brushes and any spillages with white spirit.

Aftercare & Storage

If you notice that the finish is beginning to lose its protection or shows signs of wear over time, ensure the area is clean and dry and apply a fresh coat. If there are very stubborn marks or imperfections, the area can be sanded down and cleaned with a wood cleaner.
